Most pool owners notice their water level dropping and immediately wonder: is this a leak, or just evaporation? The bucket test is the easiest way to find out before calling a professional.
What You’ll Need
- A 5-gallon bucket
- A marker or piece of tape
- Pool water
Step-by-Step
- Fill the bucket with pool water to about 1 inch from the top.
- Place the bucket on the first step of your pool so it’s exposed to the same sun and air as the pool itself.
- Mark the water level inside the bucket with tape or a marker.
- Mark the pool’s water level on the tile or skimmer face.
- Wait 24 hours without adding water, running the pump, or swimming.
- Compare the drop. If the pool water drops more than the bucket water, you likely have a leak.
Reading the Results
- Pool and bucket drop the same amount → Evaporation. Normal in Central Florida’s heat.
- Pool drops more than the bucket → You probably have a leak.
- Bucket drops more than the pool → Very rare. Could indicate a groundwater issue.
